Read on for more details:

Topic: "Your Neighborhood's Secret Dump: The Pacific's Floating Garbage Patches"

Speaker: Eben Schwartz of the California Coastal Commission

Time and location: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 3 at Explorit's neighbor in east Davis, the Davis Musical Theatre Company, 607 Pena.

Details: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains million of tons of debris that have become trapped in a gyre, a permanent clockwise spiral of currents. About 90 percent of the trash is plastic. In 2001, researchers estimated that plastic outweighed plankton at a ratio of 6 to 1, but as-yet-unpublished research show those figures to be extremely low.

Schwartz will discuss what scientists know about the Patch, its origins and potential solutions. He'll include a PowerPoint presentation as well.
